Egypt intercepted Libyan surface-to-air missiles bound for Gaza, according to media reports over the weekend.

Cairo arrested five smuggling cells over the last few months as they were ferrying the weapons towards Gaza.

The reports suggested Gaza-based terrorists struck a deal for the weapons with Libyan contacts.

These reports emerged as Israel struck a deal for the release of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit from the clutches of Iran-backed Hamas. Shalit has been held in Gaza for more than five years.

Some foreign diplomats and leading aid workers have suggested the Shalit agreement is the perfect opportunity for Israel to begin negotiating with Hamas.

However, the revelations of the Libyan arms smuggling is further proof of Hamas’ real intentions. The organization is committed to the destruction of Israel.

“Hamas regards itself the spearhead and the avant-garde. It joins its efforts to all those who are active on the Palestinian scene, but more steps need to be taken by the Arab and Islamic peoples and Islamic associations throughout the Arab and Islamic world in order to make possible the next round with the Jews,” reads Hamas’ charter.

Hamas continues to use tunnels under the border with Egypt to smuggle arms, cash and terrorists in and out of the Palestinian coastal enclave it has controlled for the last four years.

The organizations main sponsor, Tehran, is constantly seeking ways to ship weapons into Gaza to arm Hamas’ military wing.

Earlier this year, Israel seized a vessel carrying missiles, shells and other arms from Iran bound for Gaza.
