by Tom Brennan,
We write, call and speak in support of Israel as a Biblical duty. Many of us attend seminars and meetings that have speakers from The Land who motivate and support us. But there is a way to stand with Israel that gives a unique and very personal way to know this Land and the people who live there.
There are many volunteer organizations that support Israel’s charities and nonprofits. The IDF has a volunteer program that offers those who are willing and qualify a chance to serve the IDF in support roles for 3 week “hitches”. To be sure some qualifications are required, they are listed on their web page and contacts are available by email. This not a summer camp, you live on an IDF base and have a liaison to help you work. This is not a resort, it is an Army base. There are rules. The IDF is a combat-ready, always on alert force to defend Israel. Freeing front line soldiers from supply reconditioning and repacking, laundry, and other noncombat duties means another soldier is ready to fight as Israel’s enemies threaten and prepare for war. The IDF is where Israel’s complex but successful society is forged. Universal service is required and the mix of Israel-born, immigrants from the Law of the Return, Jews from Ethiopia and Europe, Christian Arabs, Druze and Bedouin all work together as citizens. This is the forge upon which a nation is built and held together.
Christians are welcome. We must remember that we are there to serve and not convert. The best way to get to know the Israelis is to live as one. Our witness is by our presence and willingness to help and learn.
I am planning to volunteer in 2016. I’m not young anymore and want to see Israel as more than a tourist or pilgrim. This Nation and its people amaze me and working side by side with those who share this admiration and respect will only make me more dedicated to standing for The Land. Maybe you can join me in volunteering for Sar-El. It will be the experience of a lifetime for all of us.
