The United States intervened when the UN Security Council called for an end to Israeli attacks against Gaza.
Washington used its veto powers on Sunday to block a resolution calling for an end to Israel's attack on Hamas in the Gaza strip.
The council has though issued a 'non-binding' statement that calls on Israel to voluntarily bring all its military activities in the besieged region to an immediate end.
The statement comes as Israel began a fresh wave of air strikes on the Hamas terrorist infastructure on Sunday. According to Hamas sources 230 have been killed and 800 wounded in similar attacks on Saturday.
Croatian UN Ambassador Neven Jurica read out the non-binding statement on behalf of the 15-member body that "called for an immediate halt to all violence" and on the parties "to stop immediately all military activities."
"The members of the Security Council expressed serious concern at the escalation of the situation in Gaza," he said, as the president of the council.
The council also requested the opening of border crossings into Gaza to address the serious humanitarian and economic needs in Gaza and to ensure medical treatment and a continuous supply of food and fuel.
Thirty humanitarian aid trucks were set to pass into the Gaza Strip Sunday. Defense officials said that the number of trucks was decided upon in coordination with international aid groups.
Israel also planned to allow some Palestinians wounded in Saturday's offensive on Hamas to enter Israel to receive medical treatment.
Officials said the decision to open the crossings and offer assistance to the wounded was part of Israel's effort to create international legitimacy for its continued operations against Hamas.
US representative to the UNSC, Zalmay Khalilzad, defended the Israeli move, saying Tel Aviv has the right to self-defense.
"I regret the loss of any of all innocent life," he said, adding that Hamas rockets precipitated this situation.

The U.S. has some moral fiber.
Hamas has bombed and shot rockets up the ying yang into Israel. Now the Israelis are fed up, and they give full measure back, and suddenly the Israelis are at fault?
Why is that the Muslim world simply turns a blind eye to the Armenian Genocide? Or the calls from the Kurds for their homeland?
But let the Israelis get a gruff tone and every Muslim in the world gets their turbans into a bunch.
...
There is collateral damage, and Hamas is to blame. If your neighbor had a missle launcher and ammo in his garage, and was firing randomly at Mexico or Canada, then his house was bombed, it's legitimate.
Paul should watch some of the videos the Israelis have posted, showing secondary explosions form targets. They hit a mosque, and it turned out to be an ammunition bunker.
Do your homework!
