by Tom Brennan,
In America last week we saw a number of unsettling changes to a life we saw before and now see as seriously in peril. The Supreme Court saw acrimonious debates and decisions about same sex marriage. Divisive politics once again caused strife and headlines as a 150 year old historic flag was blamed for a heinous crime committed by a violent malcontent. Israel continued to face terrorism and attacks from within and from ISIS and Iran on its borders. Sinai again became a scene for battle as Egypt was attacked. As the United States defined the ancient covenant of marriage, questions arose as to whether or not Israel would follow suit. Although popular media and social media seem to demand notice for immediacy, Israel’s form adherence to the Bible will preclude any efforts to redefine a covenant established by G-d. Israel will continue to stand and endure.
But some heartening news has resulted from the shock and trauma of rainbow flags and parades, the churches have begun to speak out, bishops, evangelists and others who dare to witness the ancient covenant have taken the courage and stand on firm ground. Israel’s example of faithfulness has inspired. Could a nation that had compromised its soul ever last 3,500 years? The Tabernacle was where The Almighty chose to meet with Moses; the Temple was not built on shifting sands but a holy mountain. The American churches are searching their soul to find their roots and water them like a tree beside a spring.
Many believe we are in the last days when the church will be persecuted. ISIS and Iran persecute Christians and make war on Israel. Many in America believe that the recent same sex marriage decision will be used to persecute Christians in the court. Remember that court suits have been used to punish those who obey their conscience instead of popular opinion. The Health Care law also held penalties for those who would not implement it fully.
Determination, fortitude and faithfulness and declaring that our allegiance and obedience are owed to G-d first need to be our watchwords. There is a move in some churches to fly the banner that declares loyalty to G-d first above the American Flag. The assembly is rising, if G-d is for us, who can be against us.
