by Tom Brennan,
On Thursday Jews and Christians will celebrate the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy as the day that Israel’s declaration of being a restored State in the world is commemorated. May 14, 1948 witnessed David Ben Gurion make the announcement that after centuries of being scattered to the four corners of the earth, the Jews were coming back. The Land that G-d had given to Abraham and his descendants would once again see his people, ravaged by persecution, pogrom and Holocaust, worship G-d in the Promised Land. All who had been away in foreign nations were welcomed back. As Christians we have a reason to celebrate this day, it is our home as well.
Beginning at sunset Wednesday until sunset Thursday celebrations, commemorations and remembrances will occur not only in Israel but wherever Israelis of the heart dwell. Although the original date May 14, 1948 is the date the declaration was made, Israel follows a Jewish lunar calendar and the date is recorded as 5th of Iyar, 5708 (dated from the Creation). Also because the celebration date this year falls on Friday, the celebration is moved a day back so as to not conflict with Shabbat. Israelis do not mix the things of G-d such as Shabbat, with the things of men.
Israel has faced attack from what always seemed overwhelming odds even from the start. Arab nations from all over the region attacked on all sides and yet the Nation won. Stories of what can only be described as miracles saturate the wars and years of constant attack that the Nation of 8.1 million Jews, Christians, Muslim and Druze citizens endure. Could any of us expect our home countries do better?
We need to write our governmental representatives and ask them to recommit to Israel’s support. We need to email or call our local media to urge them publish an acknowledgement of this event. We can use our social media, call friends, and have a celebration at church or with a social group as well. Displaying an Israeli flag, wearing a T-shirt to the gym with an Israel motif, all these can show the people of The Land that we stand now and forever for Israel.
