Groups of houses like these may have been typical of villages 2,000 years ago. Called “insulae” they were built of rough-hewn local stone and covered in crude plaster. Most had steps leading up to second storey rooms or flat roofs – the favorite place to eat and sleep in the warm Mediterranean climate.
