Rejected in his hometown of Nazareth, we are told that Jesus moved to Capernaum and made it his own. Called Kfar Nahum in Hebrew – the village of Nahum – in its day it was one of the most important towns on the lake. Being strategically positioned on the crossroads of the region’s major highways, it grew to have an estimated population of between four and five thousand. Several important events in Jesus’ life took place in Capernaum: the calling of the Disciples; the healing of Peter’s mother, and others who came to their house; the healing of the Centurion’s servant and the sick woman; the raising of the child from the dead; and Jesus’ first confrontations with the scribes and Pharisees, Matthew 8 & 9, Mark 1 & 2, Luke 4, 7 & 8.
*And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue; and taught. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. Mark 1:21-24.
