Throughout the ages the family stood at the very heart of Jewish society. The father was the undisputed head of his family while the mother preserved the Jewish line itself – a balance that gave society strength and endurance.
Women were responsible for running the home in which several generations would live, eat and sleep together. Most homes had only very basic furniture, except for the houses of the rich who lived mainly in the big towns and cities.
