Some people are calling 2014 ‘the Year of the Bible’ for Hollywood. We know this is ridiculous as we have been living in Biblical times for a while already. Here’s a rundown of what’s being released this year.
“Son of God,” Feb. 20th Century Fox
Direct from the History Channel series “The Bible” Mark Burnett is releasing the story of Jesus’ life with 20th Century Fox. If the epic “Bible” series is anything to go by, this should be a good one.
“Noah,” Nov. Regency Enterprises
Russel Crowe, Anthony Hopkins and other ‘A’ list cast members combined with a $130 million budget this should translate into a true Biblical blockbuster.

“Exodus,” Dec. 20th Century Fox
This Ridley Scott film stars Christian Bale as Moses and co-stars Sigourney Weaver.
“Mary, Mother of Christ,” Dec. Lionsgate Films
This prequel to “The Passion of The Christ” includes a stellar cast including Peter O’Toole, Sir Ben Kingsley, Julia Ormond, and Israeli actress Odeya Rush.
My first instinct is to be cynical about how well anything coming out of Hollywood could capture the depth and truth of God’s Word. A cynical campaign is being waged against Gods people and is targeting Israel’s very History, which is inseparable from these Biblical “stories”. Will the enemies of truth influence Hollywood to water down these deeply spiritual tomes? Will we end up watching star-studded special effects extravaganzas that will dazzle us into missing the historical and spiritual truths these stories were meant to teach us?My hope is when people watch “Son of God” that they will connect to a simple message that can transform people’s lives and change the world. I would like to think that when people see “Exodus” they will see how God fulfilled His promises to His people despite what may have seemed an impossible situation. I would love to see this heroic story connect people to the modern State of Israel and help them to know that Gods promises and Biblical prophecy continue to be fulfilled right now in the modern world. Will the meaning of the perfect need for Gods law in this world be understood in the film “Noah”? I hope that the film “Mary, Mother of Christ” will stay away from the deification of Mary and connect us rather to a story of her humble faith and fortitude.
The Bible could be a fantastic source of blockbuster films for years to come. In our modern culture, films and TV have been serious forces in influencing people and their convictions. Unfortunately, this powerful tool has caused much more damage than good to peoples’ spiritual journeys. Never before in history has humanity been so bombarded by so many false experiences portrayed through hundreds of channels of TV and films. A war is being waged for our minds and our spiritual lives. The stories of the Bible can be a counterweight to the banality of most popular entertainment. Hollywood has a chance to explore the deep and sometimes hidden significance of God’s Word and the ability to feed peoples souls with life-giving truth. They have the tools and the ability to bring to life these important Biblical events which are heavy with profound meaning and momentous truth.
