My primary form of transportation is my electric bike. I won’t get into how my electric bicycle has transformed my life here in Jerusalem but one of my biggest fears is having someone steal my bike. For that reason I try never to let my bicycle out of my sight for more than a few seconds. I have been known to take my bike into shops with me, this usually ends when someone shouts at me “not in here” or “who do you think you are”. Locks are ok but as an old ‘rough living’ friend told me most locks can be easily dealt with and the alternative is the hundred pound super-duper bike locks that when not in use are never comfortable outside their specific job.
Thanks to the Israeli design team HUHA my troubling burden might be mitigated quite a bit with their new bike alarm called The Cricket. This is no simple anti-theft alarm. Most bicycle alarms trigger a siren that disappears from earshot the faster the bike thief pedals away. The Cricket goes a few steps further. Using Bluetooth it will instantly alert you on your smartphone or other Bluetooth enabled device. It doesn’t stop there! If the bike thief does get away it will broadcast an SOS of sorts that other Cricket users can pick up and be alerted to the fact that the bike next to them at the stoplight is in fact stolen. As all bikers hate bike thieves it becomes a biker community watch type system.
I didn’t ask what happens when you mistakenly trigger the alarm and hoards of bikers descend on you as a mortal enemy…..
I am hoping it will work to bridge the gap between us electric bikers and the sweaty arrogant masses of traditional bicyclists.
