The shofar is an essential part of the Jewish religion. This ancient musical horn is played during various Jewish religious events. The shofar is part of the synagogue services during Rosh Hashanah and right at the end of Yom Kippur. It can also be heard every morning of the weekday during the entire month of Elul and running up to Rosh Hashanah.
Shofar should be made from the horn of an animal belonging to the Bovidae family but not a cow. Essentially, any horn that can be hollowed can be used to make a shofar. And for this precise reason, an antler cannot be used to make a shofar.
Order of preference for shofar horn
The Elef Hamagen (586:5) mentions the order of choosing the shape of the shofar and the horn of the animal from which it is made.

- Curved any other animal
- Straight – ram or any other animal
- Non-kosher animal
- Cow
Shofar horn for sale
For the first four shofars in this list, bracha or blessing is used. Shofar made from the horn of a non-kosher animal is used without bracha. A shofar made from the horn of a cow, as mentioned above, should not be used under any circumstances.
