by Tom Brennan,
Shema Yisrael. In Israel and around the world these are the first words the conscious mind speaks upon rising. It is an acknowledgement that the day begins and will end, hopefully in God’s ways. The news each day is more and more intimidating. But we can learn from Israel’s eternal Covenant with The Almighty that those who remain in faith will endure beyond the trauma and international tensions.Giving thanks is a major part of Scripture. In America we look forward to Thursday with traditional events and gatherings. This year a shadow of doubt intrudes into the celebration, but Biblical faith forbids worry or doubt. “If God is with us, who can be against us?”
Israel’s Covenant is firmed by thanksgiving for the blessings which keep The Land free and living despite the external and internal dangers that Israelis of all beliefs endure daily. Rabbis killed at prayer, young women knifed by murderers, the danger from attack from every corner threatens every hour or every day. Yet, “Shema” begins and ends each and every believer’s day.
We can learn continually from Israel’s faith and endurance by placing our full trust in The Almighty and on this coming day of Thanksgiving say “Give thanks to The Lord for He is good”. Let’s share our good wishes for a peace that lasts, enemies who become friends, and the return of The Messiah. The tribulations will end and the reward for the “good and faithful servants” will never end. Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem, Paris and our hearts.
