by Tom Brennan,
News watchers are noting the increase in extreme weather. Large-scale earthquakes are more frequent and the latest in Nepal has a death-toll of over 5500. Devastation and yet to be found remote villages in the picturesque nation are still inestimable. The Jerusalem Talmud opens up this precept beyond the Babylonian Talmud. All of mankind is deserving of being served. The parable of the Good Samaritan is evidence as well.
When the earthquake struck, within 48 hours, Israel dispatched IDF medics, supplies and began to set up emergency hospitals. Instead of merely sending donations, supplies or other material support, Israel sent Israelis to help non-Israelis. The personnel support of this nation of 8.2 million in proportion to that provided by other nations many times its size is astounding. No figures from the Palestinian Authority, Hamas, Hezbollah or ISIS and any aid contributed are yet available, nor should we expect any.Israel never responds with writing a check. Israel responds and quickly with people. Usually the already overburdened IDF is mobilized and sent. No proclamations, grandstanding, speeches or other self-congratulations are made. The United States’ State Department made a statement of condolence to the people of Nepal and sent aid. Israel searched for a lone Israeli hiker until it was sure he had perished. His family has closure. Israel’s assistance was prompt, personal and compassionate.
As many who read Scripture and believe in prophecy know “signs in the sun, the moon and the stars”, the earth groaning and other signs we call anything from extreme weather to climate change are occurring worldwide. We are not to sit by and be voyeurs of tragedy but to act as good Samaritans. We are to act out of Torah and place others above ourselves, above our comfort and above our feelings. Witnessing is an activity; love is an action and a sign of obedience to the Highest Law. Christians can take an example of how Israel never hesitates about who is in need or how to respond. The Creator loves all life and we are to do the same. Thank you Israel!
