The word ‘anoint’ means to smear or rub with oil. To consecrate – set apart as holy – a person, place or object to GOD. Like Jacob did in Genesis 28 verse 10 to 22 after GOD appeared to him in a dream. When he awoke, Jacob turned his stone pillow into a pillar and poured oil over it as an act of consecration, setting the area apart to GOD.
Genesis 28 is the first reference to anointing oil in the Bible, and it teaches us about sanctification and dedication to the ALMIGHTY in an act of devotion.
This occurrence is followed by many other Scriptural references to anointing oil, serving as examples for us to apply today as Spiritual tools in our relationship with the FATHER.
Anointing as part of healing is another Biblical prescription, as James 5 verse 14 to 15 illustrates: “Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the LORD: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the LORD shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”
Healing in conjunction with the application of anointing oil was also a directive from JESUS to HIS disciples in Mark 6 and a Spiritual weapon handed down to members of the early churches. While this custom was absent from the church for centuries, we are witnessing its comeback in modern times, with many testimonies of miraculous healing confirming that anointing oil, applied in faith, is symbolic of GOD’s ability to deliver us from the claws of sin and disease. Of course, it’s always crucial to note that there is no power in the oil itself, but that it is rooted in our GOD and SAVIOUR.
It was Biblical custom to anoint GOD’s chosen ones to become king, as was the case with Saul, David and Solomon. At first glance this may not seem to apply as example to you and me personally as our paths on earth may not be destined for royalty or grand-scale leadership, but as believers we are en route to becoming the bride of the KING of heaven and earth. We as believers are counted among the chosen ones of GOD through JESUS, to be royal heirs. Just as Queen Esther prepared herself using the oil of myrrh prior to meeting king Xerxes, our application of anointing oil aid us as we prepare to meet our KING and SAVIOUR.
The Word is strewn with a number of other applications of anointing oil that we can use during Spiritual warfare, such as breaking bonds in Isaiah 10 verse 27, deliverance in Mark 6 verse 12 to 13, signifying the end of a period of mourning in 2 Samuel 12 verse 20 and joy in Psalm 45 verse 7, as well as empowerment by the SPIRIT in 1 Samuel 16 verse 13.
Anointing as a sign of GOD’s blessing was a regular occurrence in Biblical times, and as believers today, we don’t need to limit ourselves in terms of when we may or should use anointing oil. When JESUS died for our sins the temple veil tore, granting anyone who does so in HIS NAME unlimited, unrestrained access to GOD. Being in the presence of the ALMIGHTY is what HE longs for and what we need most in this world, it’s not reserved for certain events during the week or year, it should be a daily, SPIRIT-led habit. When we apply anointing oil it is a symbolic representation of our faith and the blessing we have in JESUS through the SPIRIT. It’s a sign that YESHUA has turned our mourning into dancing!
