James 5 verse 14 to 16 goes a long way in clarifying the effectiveness of healing through anointing:
“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the LORD. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the LORD will raise him up.”
In the early churches that formed following the ascension of JESUS, it was customary for members to be anointed as a means of blessing, but also specifically to heal the sick. Sadly, this Biblical custom was lost along the way, but in modern times, many churches and believers are rediscovering the SPIRIT-power that anointing is meant to unlock. Anointing of the sick is an important function of a church congregation and it is definitely advised for any congregation to talk openly about the Scriptural roots and truths related to anointing oil, and to set the example on using it correctly.
But is the church, or the presence of the elders with James 5 as reference, the only place where believers can find healing through anointing? What about our personal application of anointing oil to heal ourselves or another believer?
The Word teaches us that anointed healing takes place in the presence of the SPIRIT of GOD. Luke 4 verse 18 shows us that even the SON of GOD was anointed with the SPIRIT leading up to HIM healing the sick. Throughout the Scriptures we see that the use of anointing oil is symbolic of drawing the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT, which is why it is so effective in healing the sick.
Digging deeper into the featured extract from James 5, we encounter a few factors that play a role alongside anointing oil when the sick is healed.
The call for the elders, who acted in leadership positions in Israel, would imply that authority is required for healing to occur. We also read in Mark 6 that JESUS gave his twelve disciples authority over impure spirits as HE sent them out. As a result they drove out demons, anointed the sick with oil and healed them. The authority that JESUS earned on the cross also belongs to every believer who chooses to be one with HIM.
Another key part of James 5 is “…a prayer of faith.” The Bible says that faith is to be sure of the things we cannot see and when the disciples anointed the sick, they did so believing that it was already done, even before there were visible signs. And because of that faith, the sick were healed.
The fact is that JESUS already carried our sickness on the cross and by HIS wounds we are already healed.
HE said it HIMSELF: “It is finished.” The price has been paid. Anointing the sick with oil in an act of requesting GOD’s healing, is asking for something that is already ours, we just have to stretch out our hands in the Spiritual and take hold of it. It’s like a gift package with your name written on, it’s yours already, but if you don’t open it, you don’t have the pleasure or use of what’s beneath that wrapping!
When the Temple veil tore, we as believers gained direct access to the Holy of Holy’s, where the presence of GOD dwells. You can access HIS presence as we speak, tonight, tomorrow and every day after. As a result we have access to many, many good things, including anointed healing.
You may access and ask for it now, today.
But whenever you feel you need guidance and assistance, remember that where two or three are gathered in HIS NAME, there HE is also. Praying with another, especially someone with the SPIRIT gift of healing may just be the faith boost you need. And by no means are the leaders of a SPIRIT-guided church excluded from your options. You are always encouraged to turn to men and women of faith, knowing that the effective, fervent prayer of the righteous will avail much!
