In 1934, continuing an age-old tradition, the Franciscans dedicated a modest black basalt chapel at Tabgha on the shores of Lake Tiberias. Since the 4th century AD a Chapel of the Primacy of St. Peter has stood here, marking the spot that holds the memory of Jesus’ third appearance to the disciples.
It was here that He directed the disciples where to cast their nets to catch one hundred and fifty three fish; here that they then shared a meal upon a natural stone called Mensa Christi – Christ’s Table that still stands in the middle of the church; and here that Jesus appointed Simon Peter to the leadership of the early church.
*After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias; …when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. John 21:1-6
