Earrings

While earrings are worn by both men and women, it is more popular among women. The first earrings were made of bone and wood; other materials like metal and glass and plastic found use in the designing of these jewelry pieces more recently. The designs of the earrings have also seen major changes over the years. However, it is interesting to note that religious earrings have been common through the ages.

Earrings and religion

The Bible mentions ear piercing in several contexts. The most familiar context is in Exodus 21:6 where a Hebrew slave refuses to go and continue working for his master when he is about to be freed after seven years of service. The mention is, "…his master shall take him before God. He shall be brought to the door or the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall then remain his slave for life."

Types of religious earrings

When it comes to Christian earrings, the most common designs contain the Holy Cross. These cross earrings are typically danglers that show the faith that someone has in God. The other designs that are common include hoops, studs, ear spikes and ear threads.

The Jewish people also use earrings with religious themes. Some of the most common designs include

  • Crown earrings

  • Star of David studs

  • Grafted In earrings

  • Menorah Star of David earrings

  • Harp earrings in sterling silver
