The concept of betrothal rings came in much later and was designed as a golden circlet without any stones. The nobility used rings as seals, typically worn by men.
The concept of wearing rings became much more popular, and it reached such a fever pitch that a 1416 rabbinical conventional at Bologna decreed that men were forbidden to wear more than one ring and women could wear up to three rings.
Over the course of Jewish and Christian history, messianic rings also came into being and are now worn more and more by Christians who have come to identify with GOD's plan for Israel and the Church.
