"... and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
(1 Corinthians 11:24)

The literal meaning of Kiddush is sanctification and it is a blessing that is recited over grape juice or wine for the purpose of sanctification during the Shabbat and the Jewish holidays. The word Kiddush is also used to refer to a small repast that is held on Shabbat or other festival mornings between the prayer services and before a meal.

Kiddush

A Kiddush cup is used to honor the mitzvah of Kiddush recital and the cup is required to hold a revi'it of liquid. Silver communion cups or communion glasses are most popular, but any other cup can also be used. The person who recites the Kiddush must first drink from the cup and it is then passed around or poured into small cups for the others to sip the grape juice or wine. Before Kiddush is recited, the next food item, known as the challah, is covered with a piece of cloth. Some don't even keep the challah on the table during Kiddush.

Apart from using a silver communion cup, participants in Kiddush can also use cups made from other materials. Some of the common materials include

  • Ceramic
  • Anodized aluminum
  • Olive wood
  • Stainless steel
