Mezuzah Cases & Scrolls

The mezuzah consists of a decorative case that contains a klaf, which is a piece of parchment. The klaf has specific Hebrew verses from the Torah inscribed on it. Shema Yisrael, the Jewish prayer is contained in these verses and they begin with, "Hear, O Israel, the Lord (is) our God, the Lord is One".

 Placement of the mezuzah

As per mainstream Rabbinic Judaism, the mezuzah should be affixed to the doorpost of the Jewish homes as fulfillment of the mitzvah. As per Deuteronomy 6:9, “write the words of God on the gates and doorposts of your house", and this is what the Jewish homes should follow.

The mezuzah should be affixed to every door of a Jewish home except the doors of laundry rooms, bathrooms and closets, if they are too small to be called rooms.
