One of the ways Jewish men can be identified is with their tallits and kippots. Both these items have serious religious significance for the Jews around the globe.

Jewish Tallits or prayer shawls

Tallits are traditional fringed garments worn by the Jews. These are prayer shawls with tzitzit, specially twined and knotted fringes that are attached to the four corners of the tallits. Beged, the main body of the tallit is usually made from cotton or wool. The tallit gadol is usually made of silk. Tallits can be worn over or under the usual items of clothing. These shawls are worn during the morning prayers and during Yom Kippur, they are worn during all the prayers within the period.

  • In some Jewish communities, Tallit gadols are first used during Bar Mitzva.
  • In many of the Ashkenazi Jewish communities, the tallit gadol is first worn when someone gets married.
  • In some of the other communities, the Jewish tallit is presented to the groom before marriage and even as dowry.

Jewish kippot

Kippot are caps without brims and are customarily worn as part of the requirements laid out by the Orthodox halachic authorities that mandate that one should keep their head covered during prayers. In the more orthodox Jewish communities, kippots must be worn all the time. Kippah is also known as Yarmulke or Koppel (used by the Jews of Britain).
